Feels like fall again! Summer vacations have wrapped up, school has started, and serious work is getting underway. That includes in the other Washington where a riveting hearing on privacy, chaired by our state's own Senator Maria Cantwell, took place on Sept. 29 in the U.S. Senate.
Takeaways of the hearing highlight the many areas we have been following in our own state including consumer privacy, health information protection, and artificial intelligence. Is it possible federal privacy legislation is right around the corner? The engagement of lawmakers on this topic makes me hopeful!
OPDP Presentations and Webinars
Due Diligence: I presented to the Quarterly Risk Managers Forum on Thursday, Sept. 23 on the Due Diligence Privacy Principle. I'll be doing an encore presentation of the topic on Thursday, Oct. 6 as part of the Office of Cybersecurty "Hacktober" events during Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Specifically, the webinar will dive into important considerations before and after entering into an agreement with a third party that includes sharing personal information.
Security Frameworks: We will hear from speakers from the Office of Cybersecurity and the State Auditor's Office on security frameworks on Sept. 30, 2021 at 11 a.m. Please email privacy@ocio.wa.gov for the WebEx link. We plan to record and post the presentation if you are unable to make it.
NASCIO: I have also been invited to speak at this year's annual National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) conference. I'll be presenting on the Office Privacy and Data Protection's work in Washington along with the Chief Privacy Officer of Indiana.
State Agency Privacy Assessments are DUE!
Responses for the 2021 annual privacy assessment for state agencies are due Sept. 30. The assessment is part of the annual certification requirement under state law. (See RCW 43.105.369). There is a link to the privacy survey and a .pdf of all the survey questions on the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) website. If you have questions, please email privacy@ocio.wa.gov.
