OPDP celebrates Data Privacy Week

WaTech’s Office of Data and Privacy Protection, OPDP, is putting Data Privacy Week into action with a full slate of educational events. The series delivers practical healthcare privacy guidance and explores fast-changing technology that is transforming how sensitive information is used and protected.

Data Privacy Week, which runs from Jan. 26 through Jan. 30, is designed to raise awareness about online privacy and encourage people to think about how they share personal information, with this year’s programming centered on privacy in healthcare.

“I'm especially excited about the range of perspectives we’ll hear during Data Privacy Week, including consumer health privacy issues tied to apps and wearables. The privacy landscape around health data is complex, and this week is a great opportunity to learn more,” said State Chief Privacy Officer Katy Ruckle.

Throughout the week, OPDP will host webinars and interviews that revisit core privacy principles and what they look like in practice when working with sensitive health data. Highlights include a session on HIPAA fundamentals, a discussion of confidentiality protections for substance use disorder treatment records, a conversation on consumer health privacy issues, and a session on children’s health care privacy.

The week closes with an interactive Kahoot! privacy quiz with a special emphasis on healthcare privacy. For the full schedule and event details, visit https://watech.wa.gov/data-privacy-week
