Fall is finally here. Let the learning commence!
We are excited to host our inaugural Privacy Primer Workshop this month to cover a host of privacy program subjects including: foundational privacy principles, privacy regulations, privacy by design, data sharing, incident response, privacy impact assessments and more!
Thank you to our Privacy Community for your interest and participation. Our plan is to hold the workshop when we have enough participants with an interest in the training, so if it sounds like something you would like to do please let us know at privacy@watech.wa.gov - subject line "Privacy Primer Workshop" and we can get another one scheduled!

October Webinar - Privacy Frameworks
In case you missed it, we held the Privacy Frameworks webinar on October 20th. For access to the recording, slide deck and Framework materials visit our website and look under 2022 Presentations and Additional Resources.
We covered the background of privacy frameworks and maturity models, introduced the Washington Privacy Framework, which based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) model, and discussed considerations for a framework application when launching or building a privacy program.
Data Justice Panel at APHSA
I had the distinct honor to present on a panel with Washington's esteemed Dr. Karen Johnson at the Office of Equity, and Dr. Tonik Joseph from Department of Social and Health Services on data justice, data equity, and ethics in data. We presented at the American Public Human Services Association conference in Spokane, Washington, on Oct. 19. Our discussion touched of historical misuse of data and how that impacts trust in government data collection now and what we can do to build awareness on the importance of ethical data collection and use to promote equitable and inclusive policy objectives. It was a powerful panel and a wonderful learning opportunity.
Privacy bills are starting to percolate in Washington
Last week the Governor, along with the Office of the Attorney General and Washington lawmakers announced legislation to further protect sensitive health care data of Washington residents. These legislative efforts are tied to the protection of reproductive and gender affirming care. Governor Inslee also confirmed he would be seeking a constitutional amendment in Washington to affirm reproductive rights in Washington state via legislation. Privacy of health care information is a cornerstone for this legislative work.
See you next month with more updates from our office!
