Happy Halloween! October was jam-packed with important events, and I want to share my “In case you missed it” (ICYMI’s) highlights!
ICYMI #1:
As a part of Governor Inslee’s Executive Order on AI (24-01), WaTech released the State of Washington Generative Aritificial Intelligence Report. The report outlines a strategic roadmap for the adoption and integration of GenAI technologies across state agencies.
ICYMI #2:
As another deliverable under the governor’s EO, WaTech released its Initial Procurement Guidelines for Public Sector Procurement, Deployment, and Monitoring of Generative AI. The guidelines include tasks that should take place throughout the lifecycle of use of a Gen AI technology. The recommendations are organized into three different phases: (1) Requirements development, (2) Procurement, development, and deployment, and (3) Ongoing monitoring.
ICYMI #3:
Also in relation to the EO, I moderated a panel on the work being done to complete all of the deliverables by January 2025. Part of the EO’s focus is on the benefits and transformational effects AI can have on state government delivery of services, while also considering the risks and impacts on Washington communities. See our panel discussion with experts doing this work – Nick Stowe and Tavares Terry of WaTech and Joe Wilcox of the Workforce Training Board.
ICYMI #4:
For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I presented on the current legislation to increase safety for kids online and provided other practical tips on children’s data protection. My presentation included a deep dive into the latest developments on the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act (KOSPA) and discussion on the first amendment challenges regarding legislation on age-appropriate design code. The presentation slide deck is also posted.
ICYMI #5:
The AI Taskforce, administered by the state Office of the Attorney General, met Oct. 29 to finalize the bylaws, select a leadership committee, and formalize the subcommittee memberships. I gave an update on the Executive Order 24-01 work during that meeting. (You can watch the meeting on TVW.) Links to other recent AI Task Force subcommittee meetings can be found on the AGO website.
Thanks and see you next month with more updates!
