Building resilience: Zero Trust takes center stage in WaTech's security strategy

Zero Trust

Washington Technology Solutions (WaTech) has released a comprehensive white paper that lays out the vision, rationale, and guide for adopting Zero Trust security across state government. The document describes how the state is responding to growing cyber threats, setting a foundation for a resilient digital future.

“Zero Trust is not a buzzword, it’s a strategic shift in how we think about trust, access, and accountability in a digital government,” said Ralph Johnson, Washington state’s Chief Information Security Officer. “We are building a culture where verification is continuous, and resilience is designed into every layer of our systems.”

As cyberattacks escalate in volume and sophistication, traditional perimeter-based security is no longer sufficient. WaTech’s white paper explains why Zero Trust, a model that assumes no user or device should be trusted by default, must be at the heart of modern state cybersecurity.

“Zero Trust isn’t about a tool or product you can buy. It’s a way of thinking that helps guide both big-picture plans and day-to-day decisions regarding cybersecurity.” said Mikel Costello, WaTech’s Strategic Planning and Design Manager. “WaTech is helping the state move toward a model that protects every user, every device, and every interaction with continuous verification.”
