Digital Experience Program (DEX)

Welcome to Washington’s Digital Experience Program (DEX)

Washington is improving digital services for everyone

Washington state is investing in better digital experiences for residents, visitors, businesses, and state agencies. A dedicated team of professionals — the DEX Program — partners with agencies to make online services simpler, faster, and more secure.

As part of this work, we’re replacing SecureAccess Washington (SAW) with WA.gov — a new single sign-on system that provides one login, stronger privacy protections, and easier access to state services. This transition will help agencies deliver more consistent, user-friendly services across the state.

The DEX Program is leading this transition, onboarding agencies to the new system and preparing to retire SAW by 2027. Learn more about the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) Replacement project.

Our Vision

Our vision is to make it easy for people to find, securely access, and manage Washington state services online and eliminate the digital barriers that stand in the way between customers and the critical benefits the state provides.

Our Mission

Our mission is to replace the state’s legacy SAW portal with WA.gov – a product that leverages modern identity and access management solutions and user-friendly digital solutions that reduce the barriers customers face accessing services online.

Our Priorities

The DEX Program is guided by five core priorities:

  1. Replace the legacy SAW portal with a modern, secure, and user-friendly alternative.
  2. Make it simple and easy for customers to access state services, no matter who they are or where they live.
  3. Support secure access to any state service through one login.
  4. Partner with agencies to grow digital self-service across the enterprise.
  5. Build shared infrastructure that reduces duplication and supports innovation.

Guiding Principles

  • Put people first through human-centered design.
  • Ensure accessibility and equity for all users.
  • Protect privacy and align with Zero Trust principles.
  • Invest in modern, scalable technology.
  • Partner with agencies to deliver shared value.

Why this work matters

People expect government services to be as easy and accessible as their favorite websites. But too often, outdated systems and disconnected experiences get in the way. SecureAccess Washington (SAW) is one of these outdated systems. The DEX Program is fixing that.

We’re building a new single sign on portal to replace SAW  that:

  • Makes it easier to find and use state services
  • Offers a single login through a new WA.gov account
  • Protects user privacy and strengthens security
  • Helps agencies deliver better, more consistent service
