Thank you to everyone who helped to get the Enterprise Privacy and Data Protection Policy over the finish line. It was adopted on June 24, 2024, by the Technical Services Board. At the request of our state agency privacy community, the Office of Privacy and Data Protection has developed resources to assist with policy adoption. Specifically, we have published three resources including:
- Example Privacy Policy.
- Privacy Notice Implementation Guidance.
- Privacy and Data Protection Policy Crosswalk.

Artificial Intelligence
The first meeting of Washington’s AI Taskforce was held July 26, 2024. If you missed it, you can see the recording on TVW. Highlights included training for the taskforce members on the Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act, a discussion of the draft charter including the possibility of adding additional subcommittees, and subcommittee chair assignments. Additional subcommittees that were not already listed in the law include Climate and Energy, Autonomous vehicles and Transportation, and Ethical and Responsible AI.
I have been asked to lead the Consumer Protection and Privacy subcommittee and the State Security and Cybersecurity committee. If you have an interest in those subcommittees, please let me know. We are starting the work to find members and schedule meetings. For awareness, all subcommittee meetings are subject to the Open Public Meetings Act.
In case you missed it
I presented this month on Ethical Considerations in the use of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, and Washington's approach to Generative AI. In the material I discussed many of the uses of AI in Healthcare and an overview of the ethical issues that may arise, the ‘black box’ problem of identifying how AI systems make decisions, and use of AI in healthcare. I also covered the state’s AI Guiding Principles and the initiatives underway to transform state services using AI, while also recognizing and addressing potential risks posed by its use.
Thanks and see you next month with more updates!
