Happy fall, everyone! This month, we’ve been focusing on how data and privacy intersect in meaningful ways. From shaping an Enterprise Data Strategy for Washington to engaging with national and local leaders on data governance, AI, and privacy practices, there’s been incredible progress on initiatives that highlight the importance of responsible data use.
Enterprise data strategy work
Washington Chief Data Officer Irene Vidyanti hosted several workshops with state agencies to start the development of an Enterprise Data Strategy for the state. Thanks to all those privacy people who were able to attend and contribute to the workshops! I am happy to report that privacy and security were key themes to emerge from our discussions surrounding the collection, use and sharing of data.
The workshops included over 150 invitees with more than 90 data leaders in attendance. Over 140 strategic themes were created based on over 1100 ideas generated. The input and engagement on this work has been tremendous. Next steps will be development of final goals and pillars to support a statewide data strategy. Key themes that I see focus on include data governance, workforce development, data literacy, and data standards. Stay tuned for more details as the work and strategy is refined.
Future of data summit
I recently joined data leaders from across the nation at the 2024 Future of Data Summit hosted by the Center for Digital Government. The focus was on the growing role of artificial intelligence and the increasing importance of quality data in government as a result. AI is pushing real-time analytics to new levels, making data-driven decision-making even more crucial. Discussions centered on data maturity and governance to ensure responsible use and protection of data. I enjoyed connecting with state and local privacy and data leaders to share insights and lessons learned. Our data leaders showed great interest in partnering with privacy professionals to enhance and enable new and existing projects.
Washington Digital Government Summit
I also participated on the Transforming Constituent Engagement and Access panel at the Digital Government Summit held at the Tacoma Convention Center this month. I had the opportunity to talk about how the importance of the privacy office’s work is key to help guide responsible data practices to build public trust in these types of digital services. I was joined by WaTech’s Wendy Wickstrom who manages web and user experience for the state. Other highlights from the event included discussions of AI, cybersecurity, technical workforce engagement, managing third party risks, and other emerging trends. Thanks to all of our state, local, and industry partners for making this a great event!
Thanks and see you next month with more updates!
