September 2025 Privacy Points

October marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Privacy is proud to support our partners in protecting Washington’s critical systems. Throughout the month, the Office of Cybersecurity will host a series of presentations on current issues and best practices.

Join me on Oct. 9 for a session exploring recent challenges involving AI and chatbots.

Title: Responsible AI in Washington State

Description: In this session, I will:

  • Break down the most recent Congressional hearings spotlighting chatbot safety, transparency, and accountability.
  • Examine the Federal Trade Commission’s investigation and enforcement priorities around AI claims, data practices, and unfair or deceptive conduct.
  • Explore the unique risks AI poses to children and teens, including exposure to harmful content, bias, privacy concerns, profiling, and manipulation.

Enterprise AI Policy

The draft Washington state enterprise policy on Artificial Intelligence is making its way through the governance process.  Thanks again for all of the engagement of our partners in reviewing and voting for the policy to be presented to the Technology Services Board in December. This AI policy journey started last December and its development has continued to mature and improve as we iterate forward.  More to come as we work through a few remaining issues including rolling out new Responsible AI training for all state employees.  Thanks again for the technology and business community support!

Joint Legislative Audit Review Committee

Recognition goes to Zack Hudgins for his great work representing the Office of Privacy and Data Protection (OPDP) in the preliminary hearing on JLARC’s performance audit of OPDP. I’m proud to say that OPDP was recognized for great work in the audit with a high user satisfaction rate and meeting its statutory requirements. I look forward to representing OPDP in the final hearing before the committee in December.

Thanks, and see you next month with more updates!
