NASCIO State Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) Leadership Summit
I had the opportunity to meet with my fellow state CPOs recently to discuss current privacy initiatives, challenges, and shared learnings in our respective states. It is always fantastic to learn and collaborate with those of us in the unique intersection of privacy, technology and state government work. For more information on the state CPO role check out National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO)’s most recent report.
Key highlights include:

State privacy leadership is expanding: 31 states now have an enterprise-level CPO, up from 17 in 2020.

Programs are maturing: 29% have established privacy programs and 54% are developing them; 79% now use the NIST Privacy Framework.

AI is reshaping the role: 90% of CPOs help develop AI policy
Overall, the theme seems to be that privacy is evolving from a legal-compliance function into an enterprise governance, risk, and public-trust discipline. Thanks to NASCIO and my fellow CPOs for supporting and participating in this important work.
Certified Information Privacy Management (CIPM) Exam Study Group
Carissa Bourdon of our office will lead the next CIPM Study Group on August 27th at 2:30 p.m. Join us to review sample CIPM test questions and discuss topics related to the test. If you are able to study one of the CIPM test domains feel free to bring a sample question with you to quiz the group. Please email Privacy@watech.wa.gov to get a calendar invite; public sector employees in Washington are welcome whether they are about to take the CIPM examination test or are just starting out.
