S2: Future State Alternatives Analysis and Target Architecture

Notice: applying this to your agency.

The IT Project Resources are not meant to replace your agency’s internal project management practices or prescribe how you must operate. Instead, they offer concepts and tools that can strengthen delivery by providing a scalable framework for project level coordination. All project documentation should be maintained throughout each stage in alignment with agency policies and, where applicable, WaTech requirements and oversight expectations.

Building on the completed Current State assessment and the draft Future State vision, evaluate multiple future-state architecture alternatives and determine the recommended target architecture. This task assesses different design options across organizational, process, technology, and communications infrastructure to identify the approach that best aligns with strategic priorities, partner needs, and long‑term goals. The selected target architecture will serve as the foundation for the subsequent Gap Analysis.

Key Activities:

  • Define and document viable future-state architecture alternatives.
  • Assess each alternative against consistent evaluation criteria (e.g., feasibility, cost, scalability, alignment with strategy).
  • Analyze impacts to processes, roles, capabilities, and technology.
  • Engage impacted parties to validate assumptions and gather input.
  • Compare alternatives and identify strengths, risks, and dependencies.
  • Recommend the preferred target architecture and rationale.

A Future State Alternatives Analysis and Target Architecture outlines the evaluated options, comparison results, and the selected target architecture to be used as the baseline for the Gap Analysis.
